For Inhabiting Folk Portraits, I was invited as the 2018 Guest Artist at Fruitlands Museum to make inspired companion paintings for a selection of their American folk portrait collection. The Curator, Shana Dumont Garr gave me a prompt to consider what the subjects were thinking about or looking at. Through acquired historical research, site visits, and using my imagination, I created 10 pairings. My paintings were inspired by the painting tradition and style of folk portraits but included references to contemporary life and art. Each pairing contains a co-dependent narrative and auto-biographical musings.
